You may be suffering from insomnia.  It is estimated that as many as 48 percent of the population has insomnia occasionally, while as many as 22 percent suffer from chronic insomnia.
How do I know if I"m getting the amount of sleep I need?

Some of the signs you may not be getting the amount of sleep you need are:

• The inablility to concentrate
• "Nodding" off during work or school
• Hard time waking up in the morning
• Feeling moody, irritable, depressed or anxious

If you always feel tired or drowsy during the day, you may not be getting the right amount of sleep.

If you don't get the sleep you require your body will create a sleep "debt."  However, a person can make up for sleep that was lost during the week by simply sleeping more on the weekend.
How much sleep is required varies from person to person.
Trouble sleeping can be caused by several things. Among them:

• Lifestyle factors-using alcohol and stimulants like caffeine, nicotine. Irregular sleep/wake hours.
• Environmental factors - Temperature,  noise, daylight, a sleep partner who snores.
• Psychological disorders - Sleeplessness can be linked to anxiety, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
• Menopause - Hot flashes in woman experiencing menopause can result in being brought from a deeper more restful stage of sleep into a lighter state of sleep.
• Illness or medical problems - Illness or pain can cause a person to have sleep problems such as, digestive problems, heart conditions, pain - sinus headache, arthritis.
• Sleep related disorders - Sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome.

Other things can affect your ablitiy to sleep also:

• Caffine - Drinks like soft drinks, coffee, energy drinks. Caffeine has been found to affect people's ability to sleep 10-12 hours after ingesting it.  Substitute caffeine with caffeine free teas
• Spicy foods -  Eat spicy foods at least 2-3 hours before bedtime
• Over the counter or perscription medications - Diet pills, decongestants and energy boosting drinks can disrupt sleep.
• Nicotine - Smokers tend to wake after 3-4 hours of sleep because of nicotine "withdrawal".
• Alcohol - Causes a lighter stage of sleep.
Modern day life is fast and stressful. It's hard to find the time to sit down and relax at the end of a day. But we all owe it to ourselves to take just a little time each day to make sure our tired bodies are getting what they need to keep us going. So take some time and learn how to relax.
