Pillows serve a more important role in our ability to sleep than most people realize. First and foremost the pillow is the one item we depend on to keep the alignment of our heads, neck and spine while we sleep. Secondly, nothing can be more comforting than a good pillow. Improper alignment of your head, neck and shoulders can also contribute to snoring.
Different pillows serve different purposes. For instance,
If you sleep on your back your pillow should support the natural curvature of your spine with the right amount of support under your head, neck and shoulders.
If you sleep on your side, your pillow should support your head and neck while your spine is supported in a natural horizontal position. Some people even use a small pillow or rolled up towel under their waist for additional support.
If you prefer to sleep or rest on your stomach, you should use a pillow that's flat and possibly another flater pillow under the stomach to maintain the alignment of the spine.
Based on personal preference and body size a pillow should maintain a height of 4-6 inches to adequately support the head, neck and shoulders while lying on your back.
